Uncertain Signs*, 2019-20

20” x 20”

Signs are everywhere but these visual symbols are often taken for granted in a world dominated by an overabundance of written text. It is only when signs lose their clarity, as related to their loss of meaning or decay over time, can they be appreciated as something other than as just another word bite. These “ghosts” of obscured or soon-to-be-gone typography, which are typically oversized and glamorize ordinary things such as business names, have deep layered significance. They show us a past in the present and how precarious the present actually is.
